New logo: Solvay

Solvay is a Belgian chemical company with a long history going back to 1863. For most of that history, its company symbol has been an S with an arrow, but that long legacy ended on January 17, when a new corporate identity was revealed as part of an overhaul of the company's organisation.

In place of the ancient symbol comes a swirling S, that is said to be and expression of Solvay's ambitions. It was created by Paris based design agency Vincenti Design.

New logo: Asian Paints

Asian Paints is an Indian chemical company that manufactures, well, paint. Last week, on September 27, it revealed a new logo, that apparently represents "a more meaningful and personalized engagement with the increasing number of interior décor consumers in the home, retail and commercial segments across India". It will be rolled out to thousands of stores over time.

The wordmark from the previous logo is kept intact, but has been re-coloured and is accompanied by a gradienty ribbon.

New logo: Dulux, Let's Colour

Several paint brands belonging to the Dutch chemical company AkzoNobel have been given a new common visual identity, created by Design Bridge.

Overall it is about a dozen different brand names that are getting a new look, the most prominent being Dulux, which is used in many Anglo-Saxon, Asian and European markets. Other affected brand names include Flexa in the Netherlands, Levis in Belgium, Sadolin in Denmark, Bruguer in Spain, Marshall in Turkey, Vivechrom in Greece, Alba in Argentine, Coral in Brazil and Inca in Uruguay.

Having previously used different brand identities in different markets, the names are now joined under the "Let's Colour" brand platform. The phrase acts both as a strapline and a generic designation for the product category. At the center of the new design is the "Flourish logo", a lively colour wave extending from the hand of a white figure, epitomizing the "Let's Colour" spirit.

The new look has been in use for some months; it was launched in India in mid-August. The rebrand has gotten additional attention this week, as AkzoNobel has dubbed October 10-14 "Let's Colour Week" and the new design is launching into Western markets. Other regions are scheduled to follow during the year.

New logo: Milliken

Milliken is a U.S. textile company which creates fabrics for many different uses, as well as chemicals, and is based in Spartanburg, South Carolina. On Tuesday, April 26, it revealed a new logo at a press conference.

The new logo is based on the signature of Dr. Robert Milliken, who lead the company for more than a half-century, and died in December last year. The company considers he logo to be "simple, playful, bold" and signalling "a continuing commitment to excellence, leadership, and ethics".

The previous logo contained a symbol called the "industrial M", which has served the company for decades. American trademark designs (the ultimate reference for American 50s-70s corporate identities) claims it was designed in 1970 by Lefkowith, Inc. That is the only source I've found for this logo's creation, but I have no particular reason to believe it to be inaccurate. It seems the logo has been used without changes from the 1970s until this week.
