New logo: Venstre

Venstre is one of Denmark's two large parties. Despite having a name that literally means "left", it is the dominating party for the right half of Denmark's electorate. After ten years in government, it lost the election to the Social Democrats in 2011 and became the opposition party. In January, it introduced a new logo, reportedly developed by its ad agency, Hjaltelin Stahl.

The new logo symbolises modernity, reliability and responsibility and should represent "a modern worker's party". It is very much based on its predecessor, but has had the typeface switched to Gotham. The party symbol, a V in the form of a check mark, now comes in three colours. In addition to the traditional blue, there's also orange and a lighter shade of blue.

New logo: Irish EU presidency

On January 1, Ireland took over the rolling Presidency of the Council of the European Union, commonly referred to as the EU presidency. As is the custom, Ireland has commissioned a logo that will be used during the presidency.

The logo was selected through a public poll launched way back in November 2011. Irish design agency Red Dog had created four suggestions, all featuring distinct symbols in the same green-blue colour scheme. Red Dog was also behind the logo for Ireland's last term as the EU president in 2004.

The winner was announced in February 2012 and is called "spirals". It features four interlocked spiral e's in a shape that reminds one of Celtic art. It should represent the rolling nature of the EU presidency and Ireland's four decades as an EU member.

New logo: Scottish Conservatives

The Conservative Party is governing the UK at the moment, but that mandate did certainly not come from Scotland that one sent one Conservative MP to Westminster in the last election. At a party convention held last weekend, the Scottish Conservatives introduced a new logo to replace a variation of the national party logo used until then.

The new icon is a combination of the Union Jack and the saltire on Scotland's flag, referred to as the "Union Saltire". It is said to be both distinctly Scottish and to reflect pride in the United Kingdom. Naturally, it has been ridiculed by representatives of other parties.

New logo: Senterpartiet

Senterpartiet, or the Centre Party, is a Norwegian political party that developed from the agrarian movement and today holds centrists views. It one of three parties in the social democratic coalition that rules Norway at the moment. This week, on November 6, Senterpartiet unveiled a new logo, created by Oslo agency Design Container.

The party symbol has long been a four leaf clover, and the new look is an evolution of that symbol. In the new logo, the clover has been redesigned to make its four petals resemble interlocking hearts. Green is the party's signature colour and is still dominant. A new graphical element made up of short lines has been created and is used in many applications.

New logo: KDU–ČSL

KDU–ČSL is a minor political party in the Czech Republic. Those six letters are an abbreviation of Křesťanská a demokratická unie – Československá strana lidová, which translates as "Christian and Democratic Union – Czechoslovak People's Party", hinting at the party's Christian democratic ideology. In March, it unveiled a new party symbol, a stylized lime leaf that represents the party's "relationship to traditions, bond with the land, the countryside and the homeland" (my translation).

It should be noted that neither the symbol nor the wordmark are new. The wordmark has been used as party logo for a few years, and the leaf has been used as an election symbol at some point. But this rebrand seems to make the leaf a permanent part of the logo and settles on a single colour scheme.

New logo: New World Party

South Korea's ruling party, the Grand National Party, announced last week that they were changing their name to Saenuridang, which translates as the "New World Party", a name selected from suggestions sent in by the public. Namechanges are quite common among Korea's political parties, this one was triggered by a series of political scandals.

A new party logo was unveiled today, February 7. If any Korean readers could provide more information about the symbolism behind the new logo, it would be appreciated.

New logo: Groen

Groen is a Belgian political party representing Green politics in Flanders. Yesterday, January 11, it unveiled a new party logo along with the the tagline Werkt voor iedereen, meaning "Works for All".

The previous logo was allegedly introduced eight years ago. It included an exclamation mark that has been removed with the new logo, as it wasn't seen as fitting a party that aims to be moderate and listening, and has established itself as a movement which is "here to stay".

And yes, it has already been pointed out that the new logo is very similar to similar to the Groupon logo.

New logo: Coalition for the Future of Quebec

The Coalition for the Future of Quebec (or Coalition pour l'avenir du Québec in French) is an emerging political party in Quebec that hopes to establish itself as a centrist force, without too much focus on the question of Quebec sovereignty. The party was officially launched yesterday, November 14, as was its new logo.

As if to emphasize the party's willingness to work across party lines, the logo includes colours from other poltical parties. The symbol is also a combination of a C and and a Q, where the tail of the Q is made up of an extra large pie-slice. Another politicial part, the centre-left Parti Québécois, has a logo that features a Q with a very similar tail.

Quebecois media are crediting the logo to an agency called Réservoir.

New logo: BZÖ

Alliance for the Future of Austria (Bündnis Zukunft Österreich in German, abbreviated BZÖ) is an Austrian conservative-liberal party, founded in 2005 by the controversial Jörg Haider. BZÖ unveiled a new logo in late January.

When it comes to party logos, they often follow a common theme within a country. In Italy, party logos are circles filled with lots of text, in the United States they are animals with stars and bars while Swedish parties use flowers.

In Austria, most parties seem to use rectangles with three letters in them. The new BZÖ logo follows suit and places the initials in a square with the party's signature colour, orange. The weird way to merge to umlaut into the ring in the letter Ö is carried over from the old logo.
