The new corporate identity was developed by the Peter Schmidt Group in Hamburg. The new logo consists of a strong white wordmark on a red background, with a yellow period, that should reportedly remind us of a coin. The unnecessary clarifyer Markt (German for "market") has been removed.

New signage has been spotted and reported around Germany since January. More recently, Penny has updated its website with the new logo and has launched a national ad campaign for its private label range, that also features the new logo.

New logo: vanHaren

VanHaren is a Dutch shoe store chain with a history dating back to 1929. Today it has 135 stores and is a subsidiary of the German Deichmann Group. New logo: A&O

A&O is an Italian supermarket chain with about 750 stores which is a part of the retail group Selex. This week, it unveiled a refreshed logo as part of a chain-wide renovation.

The previous logo, which seems to be relic of the "block" signs that were very common on supermarkets in the 50s and 60s, has been updated by making the squares a little rounder, revitalising it while keeping it recognisable. Four "bars" in different colours have been added underneath, that "give liveliness to the sign and are consistent with the new store environments".

New look: VÃ¥rdapoteket

VÃ¥rdapoteket ("The Health Care Pharmacy") is a Swedish pharmacy chain, one of several formed after the government monopoly on retail pharmacy was abolished and many pharmacies were sold off in early 2010. A summary of all identities launched after deregulation was published here last year. Most pharmacies went for some variation of a cross and the colour green, as did VÃ¥rdapoteket.

Last year, the Swedish design agency Stockholm Design Lab developed a visual identity that turns the pharmacies into bright places that stand out in the hospital areas where they are located. Taking inspiration from the human body, SDL worked with illustrator Kari Modén to develop colourful illustrations of organs that could be used for bags, wallpapers and advertising.

New logo: jcpenney

Less than a year ago, JCPenney unveiled a new logo, created by a young graphic design student named Luke Langhus. That was the most significant logo change for the department store chain since the early 1970s. Perhaps a sign of increased logo turnover, JCPenney unveiled another new logo yesterday, January 23, as part of a major marketing initative, due to launch February 1.

The logo keeps the square from its predecessor, but changes typeface and turns it blue. A larger square with a red outline is added to make the logo resemble the US flag. It reflects the fact that JCPenney is an American brand, and the new pricing strategy, called "Fair and Square".

New logo: Monsoon

Monsoon is a UK clothing and fashion retailer. This spring it has rolled out a new look, created by New York consultancy Pompei A.D., who, in addition to the visual identity, also redesigned Monsoon's flagship store in London.

Previous logo.

When Monsson was founded in the 1970s, it was mostly selling imported clothes from India, and that heritage is reflected in the new identity. Fundamental in the Monsoon brand is an approach described as a "Modern Ethnic" sensibility. The new look is also "modern" and "ethnic". For example, the logo has been inspired by curves in traditional Indian architecture. Printed materials and store interiors feature henna-like patterns that can be described by using the previously mentioned adjectives.

New logo: Schlecker

Schlecker is a leading German drugstore chain. Although Germany is its clear home market, it also has outlets in other European countries, such as Spain, Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, France and Italy. At the end of last year, it started rebranding itself with a new logo. Recently, less than six months after the rebranding was launched, Schlecker is once again altering its logo by adding a colourful symbol.

Schlecker's main competitors are Rossmann and DM. Although Schlecker has long been the market leader and has more outlets, both competitors have fresher brand images and their stores are generally larger and more exciting. Schlecker stores are more omni-present and are smaller with merchandise crammed up to the ceiling, generally looking more boring and cheep.

One iteration of Schlecker's previous logo.

This is also reflected in their corporate identities. Rossmann has long used a stylish wordmark with a distinguished centaur in the O, while DM are using a fresh logo with ribbons that was designed by Landor Associates back in 2000. Schlecker has used heavy sans serif capital letters which has been dragged and squeezed without consistency.

To combat this, Schlecker has launched a repositioning programme called "Fit for Future" to make the chain appear brighter and friendlier. This involves opening bigger and more attractive stores with more light, lower shelves and wider hallways. Another part of the repositioning is the introduction of a new visual identity, which has been created by KW43 in Cologne.

The wordmark which was launched at the beginning of this year.

The new wordmark combines regular block letters and cursive, appearing friendlier than the old capital letters. The blue and white colour scheme is kept, but enhanced with some bright accent colours. KW43 also created a set of icons to signify departments and other uses.

The German media site Werben & Verkuafen reported on the new logo on December 16. The rollout started soon after that, in January.

The new symbol and the wordmark in a vertical lock-up.

Now, some time around May, the company has introduced a new symbol to complement the wordmark. It consists of six differently-coloured squares in a circle. It was probably derived from the set product icons that KW43 created for the relaunch.

Product icons.
