New look: Allinson Flour

Allinson is a British brand of flour, owned by the Silver Spoon Company, which in turn is a part of Associated British Foods. This month, a new package design for Allinson Flour was unveiled, created by package design agency Family (and Friends).

The agency were appointed for its work with Allinson Bread in 2011. Allinson Bread and Allinsons Flour are owned by different companies within the same corporation and have until now been independently branded. This exercise brigs them closer by giving the flour range the same signature wordmark as the bread range, as well as a very similar windmill icon.

The packaging still differs from the bread range, adopting different simple patterns that livens up the flour sacks.

The previous packaging was introduced in 2007 and designed by Ziggurat Brands. It aimed to rejuvenate the flour sector by putting emphasis on the craft of baking and the brand's heritage.

ITV's new look launched today

This morning saw the launch of a rebrand for Britain's most watched commercial broadcaster, ITV. The new logo, unveiled back in November, was implemented simultaneously across all assets, including the main ITV network (previously known as ITV1), the four additional channels, the regional news stations and the production and distribution business ITV Studios.

The rebrand was directed by the in-house bureau ITV Creative. The logo was developed by ITV with designer Matt Rudd and type foundry Fontsmith. The latter also developed a new typeface family, called ITV Reem.

The ITV network now has a broad set of idents with snippets of footage that "captures moments from everyday life across the UK, featuring real people and real scenes". The logo blends with the background by picking the colours behind it.

New look: Müller Corner

Müller Corner is a range of yoghurts sold by the German dairy company Müller on the British market. This month, the brand has received an overhauled package design, created by Coley Porter Bell. The redesign aims to "improve consumer appetite appeal and navigation at point of sale".

The brand's previous packaging turned out to be short-lived. It was introduced a little bit more than a year ago and created by JKR. It was covered here at the time. Back then, the plan was to create a unified "branded segment" in the store with packaging dominated by a cool blue shade.

CPB's redesign goes in the other direction, preferring to differentiate the flavours and variants with decorations and other imagery. At the same time, different blue shades are still part of the packaging.

New logo: Scottish Conservatives

The Conservative Party is governing the UK at the moment, but that mandate did certainly not come from Scotland that one sent one Conservative MP to Westminster in the last election. At a party convention held last weekend, the Scottish Conservatives introduced a new logo to replace a variation of the national party logo used until then.

The new icon is a combination of the Union Jack and the saltire on Scotland's flag, referred to as the "Union Saltire". It is said to be both distinctly Scottish and to reflect pride in the United Kingdom. Naturally, it has been ridiculed by representatives of other parties.

New logo: ITV

First launched in London in 1955, and eventually expanding into a network covering the entire country, ITV is the oldest and most watched commercial TV channel in the United Kingdom. Through the years it has been the home of countless productions that we associate with the best of British television. It was originally made up of separate companies that were broadcasting under different names to different parts of the country, most of them have now merged into a single company covering all of England and Wales. Since 2002, the local names have been phased out and replaced by the ITV1 moniker.

After announcing that it would drop the numeral from the network's name to become simply ITV, a new brand identity was unveiled last week, on November 15. It was developed by an in-house team, headed by people poached from other broadcasters and agencies.

The new logo is flexible one, changing colour depending on its surroundings. The version seen above is how it will look when not accompanied with imagery.

The new look launches in January. ITV also has a string of spin-off channels, and the overhaul will be extended to them at the same time. Reportedly, ITV2, the entertainment channel, will be red, the drama channel ITV3 will be blue, while the male-skewing ITV4 with cult classics and sports becomes "slate grey".

New logo: EE

Everything Everywhere is mobile telecommunications operator formed in 2010 when France Telecom and Deutsche Telecom merged their UK mobile businesses, that had until then operated under the brands Orange and T-Mobile. Today, September 11, it announced that it would launch a new brand called EE for its upcoming 4G network.

EE brand identity was developed by Wolff Olins, who were also involved in the launch of Orange back in the 90s. Visually, the identity is dominated by dots. The twos Es are made up of tiny dots, sitting on top of two circles (or larger dots). An entire typeface family of dotted letters, called EE Nobblee, has been created. Much of the communication materials also feature a grid of dots. The colour scheme is dominated by yellow and teal.

It appears the network brands Orange and T-Mobile will survive for now, existing "alongside" the new EE network. However, it is already clear that the 720 Orange and T-Mobile stores will be rebranded as EE stores.

Mr Kipling brand history

Earlier this year, you could read about a new design for Mr. Kipling, a classic British brand for ready-made pies and cakes. The history of its conception and subsequent development in the last decade is a somewhat interesting one.

The brand was created in the 1960s by Rank Hovis McDougall who wanted revitalize their cake sales, but also wanted to utilise a new bakery. When the brand launched in 1967, the range included 20 products that were sold in premium boxes with handles.

Mr. Kipling himself never actually existed, he was an invention by marketing men who wanted to give a traditional family feel for something that is actually industrially produced. This was reinforced through ads suggesting Mr Kipling was a small shop baker, specifically in TV ads where James Hayter did the voice of Mr. Kipling. A successful example of the perhaps a bit disingenuous tactic of implying great heritage where none exists.

New logo: Lyons Cakes

Lyons is a British brand for cakes and biscuits that traces its roots to a chain of tea shops, first opened in 1894. Today, it is one of those unfortunate classic brands that are shared between two companies, with the cake brand owned by Premier Foods, while Lyons biscuits are made by Burton's Biscuit Company. The two companies used somewhat similar, but different, designs until recently, when a completely new look for Lyons cakes was unveiled, created by JKR. They were also behind a new design for Mr. Kipling, another cake brand owned by Premier Foods.

JKR delved into Lyons' heritage and created a design that reconnects to it. The waitresses from that worked in the old tea shops have been resurrected and are now present in the logo, which is put on top of single-colour "sleeves" that take up most of the packaging.

New logo: Cartoon Network Too

Since 2006, Cartoon Network operates a second channel in the United Kingdom called Cartoon Network Too. When Cartoon Network launched a new global logo in 2010, that didn't apply to Cartoon Network Too, which continued using the previous logo, that had a extra blue box with the word "Too" added.

Apparently, it was hard to figure out how to attach "Too" to the new logo, as the inconsistency wasn't fixed until last week, when Cartoon Network Too finally updated its visual identity to match its sister channels. The channel now uses a series of logos where "Too" is seen in a container shape attached to the Cartoon Network logo. The blue version above seems to be the main version, but there are also variations with different shapes and colours, as seen below.

New logo: Actimel

Actimel is a "probiotic" yogurt drink manufactured by the global dairy group Danone and sold in Europe, Latin America and North America (where it is known as DanActive). This month it has introduced a revitalised visual identity in the UK, created by Dragon Rouge in London.

The most noticeable part of the redesign is an overhaul of the brand logo, probably the most substantial redesign of Actimel's logo since its launch

Actimel's visual identity differs a bit between markets, but the logo has typically used a purple serifa for 'Acti-' and a blue san-serif for '-mel', with a yellow arch tying them together. The new logo introduces a contemporary typeface and drops the arch for a sunrise icon. A sunrise has previously featured on the Actimel bottles.

New logo: Schweppes Abbey Well

Schweppes Abbey Well is a British brand of mineral water, tapped from a source in Morpeth, Northumberland. Last month, an overhauled label design that celebrates the brand's British origin, reflecting the fact that Abbey Well is the official water of the London Olympics.

The brand is owned by Coca-Cola, who bought Abbey Well in 2008 as they sought to get back into the bottled water market after the failed launch of Dasani in 2004, which turned disastrous when authorities discovered that the product contained bromate. The same year as Coca-Cola's purchase, the product added Schweppes to its name and revealed a completely new package design, created by Coley Porter Bell. The package design was updated a few years later.

The new design was created by Kontrapunkt, one of Denmark's leading design agencies, and an interesting choice for a brand exercise aimed at promoting British heritage. The interpretation of Britishness is very literal with the Union Jack in the background and a red-white-blue colour scheme. The agency says it avioded more natural themes for something that is "urban, dynamic, powerful and contemporary". The Schweppes logo has been downscaled a turned single-colour, allowing Abbey Well to build its own identity.

Although the Olympics are heavily sponsored, the actual events are advertising-free zones. For the Olympic arenas, Kontrapunkt also designed a label with the words "Still Water" in a similar typeface, pushing the IOC limits somewhat.
