New logo: DR

DR, an abbreviation that once stood for Danmarks Radio, is Denmark's public service broadcaster, founded in 1925 and broadcasting television since 1951. This month it unveiled a new logo as part of a larger identity system that will be rolled out over time.

Ever since the 60s, DR's logo has been two red letters set in an extended typeface. It was last revised in 2005. Shortly thereafter, in 2007, an alternate version with the logo in a black rectangle was introduced, and the two variants were used alongside each other for some time.

This redesign shaves off the serifs from the logo, which should make it legible even at small sizes. It also firmly establishes a single version of the corporate logo.

The new company logo developed by type designer Elias Stenalt Werner with DR's design editor Anders Thulin. Kontrapunkt developed twelve of the fourteen new channel logos. That is the eight radio logos and the four TV channels that target adults. In general, this means a tightened-up look for all channel logos with a uniform rectangular design. Only the two kids channels are allowed to brake free from the boxes.

Dutch public radio (2011)

There were several public service broadcasters that unveiled new logo systems for their radio networks this spring. One such example that I somewhat missed was the Dutch public broadcasting system that introduced new logos for its radio networks last year.

The new logos use slanted squares, a shape that has been embraced by the Dutch public broadcasting system. These squares where originally adopted by the three TV channels back in 2003 and took inspiration from the De Stijl movement of the 1920s, specifically a famous painting by Theo van Doesburg. The current radio incarnations are however don't have much in common with the ideals of De Stijl.

The previous logos were all introduced in March 2007 and combined the networks' existing logos with a common template. The new logos introduce a new template and carry over some elements from the previous logos. The logos were launched with a few months between each other, starting with the popular music network Radio 2 on New Year's Day, followed by the classical music station Radio 4 in March, news and sports station Radio 1 in June and finally in August came new logos for Radio 5 with easy listening for the over 55 and Radio 6 with soul and jazz. Where's Radio 3, you ask. That is the edgy youth radio station 3FM that has its own independent design.

New logo: Radio Rock

Radio Rock is a Finnish radio network, that was launched in January 2007 and plays, well, rock music. Yesterday, May 21, the network launched a new visual identity intended to reflect the changing attitudes of the rock music audience. In addition to the logo pictured above, Radio Rock has also adopted an icon where the two Rs are standing shoulder-to-shoulder, which looks a bit like a skull.

The Finnish agency 358 are responsible for the new look. They previously helped rebrand Radio Rock's sister network Radio Aalto.

New logos: SRF radio channels

The rebrand of Switzerland's state broadcaster SRG SSR continues. Last week, new logos were unveiled for its six German language radio channels, to be adopted by the end of 2012.

The Swiss-German television and radio departments, Schweizer Fernsehen and SR DRS, merged last year to form Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen (SRF). Now it is time to replace the old division brands with the SRF mark. For the radio channels this means adopting a new SRF Radio prefix, for example DRS 1 will become Radio SRF 1. The TV channels are also getting new names.

SR DRS' previous logos were introduced in late 2007.

New logos: Radio Télévision Suisse

As previously reported, Switzerland's national broadcaster SRG SSR is launching a brand refresh today, February 29, as it starts broadcasting six new high-definition channels.

While some divisions are simply upgrading their existing logos to the new corporate typeface, the changes will be more noticable for the French language division. The previously separate divisions for radio and television, Radio Suisse Romande (RSR) and Télévision Suisse Romande (TSR), have already merged to form Radio Télévision Suisse (RTS). Today, the RSR and TSR names were officially retired and replaced by RTS.

The TV channels, previously known as TSR 1 and TSR 2, have been renamed RTS Un and RTS Deux with completely new logos. The new marks are made up of ribbons that bend in the shape of the words "un" and "deux", which is French for "one" and "two".

The four radio networks - La 1ère, Espace 2, Couleur 3 and Option Musique - have either had their logos updated or completely redesigned, but will continue to have logos that are distinct from each other. Straight-forward marks have been created for RTS' website and two cross-platform brands for news and sports.

The new logos were reportedly created by RTS' in-house graphics studio. The RTS logo itself was created two years ago by Dunning Penney Jones as part of the rebrand of SRG SSR. The typeface was created by Dalton Maag.

In detail: Sveriges Radio (2010)

Sveriges Radio is Sweden's public radio company. With four nationwide FM networks funded be a license fee, it dominates radio listening in the country. Last year, it implemented a company-wide rebrand that had its root in the perceived need to enforce one single name for the company.

For many years Sveriges Radio had referred to itself both by its full name and by its initials (SR). After an identity review, it was decided that the company needed one single verbal identity. It could either follow the lead of most other broadcasters and switch to an initialism that is never read out in full, or they would use the full name in all circumstances. They opted for the latter, as the full name differentiates Sveriges Radio in a crowded landscape and communicates that they are a Swedish company that does radio. An an identity overhaul was set in motion.

New logos: DR Radio

Denmark's state broadcaster is called DR, an abbreviation that once stood for "Danmarks Radio". It maintains a strong position on the Danish TV market, and dominates radio listening in the country. A decade ago, DR started investing heavily in digital radio, starting up a bunch of new radio channels, most of them dedicated to specific musical genres. At its height, DR operated over two dozen radio channels, including a bunch of web-only channels. Most of them were "jukebox channels" that broadcast music non-stop without any radio hosts.

This year, DR has implemented a new radio strategy which will see the company focus on ten more permanent radio channels that will be mostly presenter-led. Several factors contributed to this change. In the beginning, DR had all the bandwidth on digital radio for themselves, but some of it was later claimed by commercial broadcasters. DR also wanted to have channels that were strong, broad, clearly defined and presenter-led.

Furthermore, one of the corporation's four licenses for national FM radio was expiring, and the centre-right government didn't want to extend it, instead preferring to give it to a new private current affairs network. This would mean that DR's talk-based current affairs network P1 and the classical music network P2 would have to share one FM frequency. They would however continue as separate channels on digital radio.

Until now, DR's four national FM networks have been DR P1, DR P2, DR P3 and DR P4, where the letter 'P' has historically meant 'programme'. The digital networks have mostly had descriptive names like "DR Jazz", "DR Rock" and "DR Hit", but with the new strategy, most of them will also have the letter P and a digit in their names. DR P5, aimed at older listeners, was launched back in November 2009. DR P6 Beat, with alternative music for the youth, came on April 11, the contemporary pop music station DR P7 Mix followed on June 6, the suite will be completed on September 12, when DR's jazz station DR Jazz becomes DR P8 Jazz. Two channels are excempt from the P-number scheme, the kids channel DR Ramasjang (a radio extension of a brand already used on television) and the youth channel DR Mama.

With the new strategy comes a new set of logos for all radio networks. DR has long used a simple template from which all radio channel logos are derived. The previous one was implemented in December 2006 and early 2007 as part of another reorganisation.

Commercial radio in Sweden has long been various music formats, with a very limited amount of talk-based programming. This will change on April 4, when Radio1 is launched on the airwaves over Stockholm, replacing an adult contemporary station called Star FM. It will broadcast call-in shows, news, discussion and traffic round-the-clock.

The station was announced on March 17, and the logo was unveiled on March 24. It is a combination of a lower case R and a 1 numeral. Its design clearly differs from that of other commercial radio logos.
