New logo: China Airlines

On Wednesday, it was announced that Taiwan's flag carrier China Airlines had joined the SkyTeam airline alliance.

China Airlines took the opportunity the reinvigorate its corporate identity. Although the plum blossom and the seal from the previous logo are essentially unaltered, there's a completely new typeface for the name, and the elements have been re-arranged in what is described as a "simple, harmonized and modern design".

Previous logo.

The current plum blossom was introduced in 1995, and the previous logo originated around that time as well. It replaced a complex symbol that had been used in various arrangements since the 1960s and included the CAL abbreviation, an aeroplane and a flower.

New logo: Air Australia

The Australian charter airline Strategic Airlines is in the process of turning itself into a low-cost passenger carrier. To mark this change, it will change its name to Air Australia as it prepares to start flights to the United States.

Strategic Airlines was "launched" as a charter airline in October 2008, taking to the skies during 2009, using the logo seen above.

The namechange has been discussed at least since April. It was eventually announced that Sean Cummins of Cummins-Ross had been tasked with coming up with a new brand strategy and designing a livery and corporate identity. Sean Cummins is also credited with the original livery for Virgin Blue, another challenger airline.

The new livery was unveiled at the beginning of September. It featured lime green as the signature colour of the new airline, including a new lime green boomerang symbol. The aim is to portray the airline as both 'Australian' and 'fresh'.

The new name will formally launch on October 30. It seems like a full colour version of the new logo is yet to be released, so we'll have to make do with the monochrome version seen at the top of this article for now.

New logo: Avios

After.

Before.

Yesterday, September 1, the UK travel loyalty programme Airmiles announced that it was rebranding and changing its name to Avios on Novemebr 16. Airmiles is operated by British Airways subsidiary The Mileage Company, and the rebrand is linked to BA's merger with Iberia. The Avios name will replace Airmiles as well as the airline-specific BA Miles and Iberia Plus.

This also means a farewell to the classic "aviation nostalgia" logo (at least in the UK). Instead we get a more abstract greyish-blue item.

The name was selected to be used both as a name for the loyalty scheme and as a currency ("One ticket to Madrid, that'll be 7,000 avios, please!"). Both the name and the new visual identity were developed by Interbrand.

New logo: Swiss International Air Lines

Swiss International Air Lines, the flag carrier formed in 2002 after bankruptcy of Swissair, announced yesterday that it would be "sharpening its brand profile". This involves new corporate logos and a tagline that will be introduced from October.

Current logo.

Swiss' current brand identity was developed by Tyler Brûlé's Winkreative when the airline launched in 2002, and it appears the livery developed then will remain in use. The update is merely aligning the corporate logo with the livery, replacing the red squares used until now with the Swiss tailfin. The intent is to make Swiss instantly recognisable as "the airline of Switzerland", and a tailfin with the Swiss cross is arguably the first thing that comes to mind when one tries to visualise that.

New logo: SureJet

In November last year, the American regional airline Atlantic Southeast Airlines bought its competitor ExpressJet. On Wednesday, July 13, the corporate identity for the merged airline was announced.

The new airline will be called SureJet, and its logo will combine aspects from both Atlantic Southeast and ExpressJet. The icon used in Atlantic Southest is kept and modified slightly by smoothing out some of the corners. The new italic wordmark is said to be inspired by the old ExpressJet logo, although the two typefaces are of course very different.

Update July 15: The SureJet name has been retracted by Atlantic Southeast management, reportedly because of negative comments online. The press release has been removed from their official website. (Thanks to an anonomous commenter for the tip!)

New logo: SATS

SATS is a Singaporean aviation services company, which provides ground handling and catering on 35 airports in Asia-Pacific. SATS used to be a part of the Singapore Airlines Group, and the abbreviation used to stand for Singapore Airport Terminal Services, but the two companies have been separated and the full name isn't used anymore.

Yesterday, June 7, SATS launched a new brand identity. The logo is a filled red circle with white lowercase letters placed asymmetrically inside it. The circular form represents both a sphere, for an aspired global presence, and a modern interpretation of a seal of approval. (A more detailed explanation below)

The previous identity was created by Singapore-based Ukulele Brand Consultants and launched on November 15, 2005. It was the company's first independent identity. The logo used before 2005 was derived from the Singapore Airlines logo.

New logo: Solaseed Air

Skynet Asia Airways is a Japanese low-fare airline, which made its first flight in 2002. On May 12, it announced that it would abandon its old boring name for a more exciting one. From July 1, it will be called Solaseed Air.

The new name is a play on words which combines the Japanese word "sora", which means sky, and "seed". It should also remind one of the second half of the musical scale, as in Do Re Mi Fa So La Si Do.

The brand positioning talks about spreading seeds of smiles, which is reflected in the logo, the pistachio green color and identity applications.

Skynet Asia Airways logo.

The previous logo has been used at least since the airline started flying in 2002. It should be noted that Skynet Asia Airways still be the official company name.

New logo: Dnata

Dnata is an aviation services company which provides ground handling, cargo and catering on several airports around the world. It claims to be the fourth largest in its field with 20,000 employees on 73 airports in 38 countries across five continents. The Dubai-based company is a part of The Emirates Group, whose most prominent brand is the Emirates airline, one of the world's largest passenger airlines.

Today (April 28), the company unveiled a new identity which had been created by Brash Brands, also a Dubai company, who were given the task last August. Dnata has grown rapidly lately through acquisitions and joint-ventures, with the problems that brings in the form of mixed corporate cultures and the absence of singular visions. An important objective of the rebrand has been to create a more united company.

As for the new logo, it carries on the colors green and blue from the old logo. It is a pretty straight-forward and friendly wordmark, with the triangles in the letter D giving it some character. Those triangles are then used extensively when the new identity is applied.

The previous Dnata logo was introduced in the year 2000.

Dnata's previous logo, used between 2000 and 2011.

New logo: InterGlobe

InterGlobe is a Indian aviation and travel corporation with more than 8,500 employees. It owns the low-fare airline IndiGo and operates a hotel chain as joint-venture with Accor.

On Saturday, April 16, the company unveiled a new corporate identity. It is credited to London brand consultancy Circus and Mumbai design agency Grandmother India.

Previous logo.

The new logo contains a symbol with six spokes with different lengths and colours. The spokes can animate to change their length and position. The main Interglobe logo and the logos of its six corporate divisions all use different interations of the symbol. The position of the "axle" in the symbol does however not change.

The six spokes probably represents to company's six divisions (or 'verticals'). The changing and fluid nature of the symbol represents change and fluidity, and the unchanging center probably stands for stability and sticking to core values.
