New logo: DR

DR, an abbreviation that once stood for Danmarks Radio, is Denmark's public service broadcaster, founded in 1925 and broadcasting television since 1951. This month it unveiled a new logo as part of a larger identity system that will be rolled out over time.

Ever since the 60s, DR's logo has been two red letters set in an extended typeface. It was last revised in 2005. Shortly thereafter, in 2007, an alternate version with the logo in a black rectangle was introduced, and the two variants were used alongside each other for some time.

This redesign shaves off the serifs from the logo, which should make it legible even at small sizes. It also firmly establishes a single version of the corporate logo.

The new company logo developed by type designer Elias Stenalt Werner with DR's design editor Anders Thulin. Kontrapunkt developed twelve of the fourteen new channel logos. That is the eight radio logos and the four TV channels that target adults. In general, this means a tightened-up look for all channel logos with a uniform rectangular design. Only the two kids channels are allowed to brake free from the boxes.

New logo: TV 2 Norway

TV 2 is Norway's leading commercial television channel, launched in 1992 after obtaining a government license. This month it has revealed a revised version of its logo.

When TV 2 was launched it had two versions of its logo, one where the numeral had a solid 3D appearance and a simplified flat print version. Both were designed by Scandinavian Design Group. Several years later, the 3D version would be dropped in favour of the print version.

The new one is a essentially a refined version of its predecessor. The integrity of the numeral hasn't changed, although thinner lines that mark its outline have been removed. The colours also remain, but have been changed to new nuances. Scandinavian Design Group were reportedly also behind this version, although Red Bee Media in London had some sort of input.

New logo: LogoTV

Launched in 2005, the confusingly named Logo is an American cable network tailored to an LGBT audience with programs about everything from adoption to drag queens. It is owned by Viacom and is probably the first such network to be launched by a mainstream broadcaster. This month Logo itself has quietly rolled out a new logo.

The previous logo had been used in various forms since the network's launch. Originally it came in many colors, but lately it has usually been black of white.

New logo: TV3 Sport

Denmark's largest sports channel, TV 2 Sport, was a joint-venture between two of the country's leading broadcasters, TV 2 and MTG, until late last year when TV 2 exited the company. As a result, the channel was renamed TV3 Sport 1 on January 7, linking it to MTG's other channels in Denmark.

There seems to be a company policy within MTG that logos have to be shiny spheres or circles, and this one follows that pattern.

New logo: HD1

December 12, 2012 saw the launch of six new national television channels in France that had been licensed earlier that year. On of the more high-profile channels were HD1, a new channel dedicated to series and movies launched by TF1, the leading commercial broadcaster.

The visual identity was devised by broadcast design agency Dream On. Overall, the on-air look has a cinematic premium feel. It is said to be designed as a series of stories, aiming to "give the brand a cinematic dimension and a promise of a great show". The break bumpers show blurred backgrounds where different objects appear to revealed the logo.

Dream On worked with a visual effects studio called Microbe Studio in creating the break bumpers.

New logo: Food Network

Food Network, the first network solely dedicated to food, launched a new look this month, on Sunday January 6. The agency behind this rebrand was Troika who did everything from strategy, to logo design, to graphics package.

The plate-shaped logo has received a minor update with more contemporary typefaces and a "sense of dimension". The last Food Network logo was introduced almost exactly ten years earlier, on January 1, 2003.

Programming on the Food Network is very much driven by celebrities the network itself has created, and they are the focal point of the new look along with food-related environments and textures. This is summed up in the creative concept, dubbed "Characters and Stories". Visually, the graphics are built on modules with different textures, colors and imagery relating to different genres of specific programs.

ITV's new look launched today

This morning saw the launch of a rebrand for Britain's most watched commercial broadcaster, ITV. The new logo, unveiled back in November, was implemented simultaneously across all assets, including the main ITV network (previously known as ITV1), the four additional channels, the regional news stations and the production and distribution business ITV Studios.

The rebrand was directed by the in-house bureau ITV Creative. The logo was developed by ITV with designer Matt Rudd and type foundry Fontsmith. The latter also developed a new typeface family, called ITV Reem.

The ITV network now has a broad set of idents with snippets of footage that "captures moments from everyday life across the UK, featuring real people and real scenes". The logo blends with the background by picking the colours behind it.

New logo: Foxtel Movies

On January 1, the operations of Australia's two premium movie channel packages - Showtime and Movie Network - were winded down and replaced by one common brand, Foxtel Movies. This was because Australia's largest pay TV distributor wanted to take its premium channels in-house and buy movies directly from the content providers. Previously, Foxtel only owned half of Showtime Australia, while the rest of that service and all of Movie Network was owned by consortia of movie studios.

The main logo is a straight-forward Gotham wordmark with a leaning M that is also used separately as an icon. Logos for individual channels consists of the leaning M and the channel name.

New logo: VH1

Most readers are probably familiar with the American cable network VH1. Originally a music video network for somewhat older viewers, it has over time shifted its focus to reality programming. Over the weekend, it adopted a new look with a new logo that had been previewed in the past few days.

VH1's new logo has a plus sign embedded in the H. This expresses VH1's new brand statement, "The Ultimate Mash Up". For example, a video says VH1 is a mash up of music + pop culture + nostalgia. VH1's new signature color appears to be purple, but other complementary colors are also used.

New logo: Smíchov

Smíchov is a new Czech television channel dedicated to comedy, with sitcoms, movies and some animation. It was launched by TV Nova, one of the largest TV companies in the country, on December 23 by Nova.

As I've understood its, the name is some sort of pun on the word laughter. Channel graphics are using a full range of bright colours, which is also reflected the logo which is using a stenciled typeface. A colourful pattern with shapes similar to the letterforms in the logo can be seen as a drape or flag in idents.

New logo: UniMás

TeleFutura is a Spanish language TV network in the United States. Established in 2002, it competes with Telemundo to be the second most watched Hispanic TV network. Univision, the market leader, is also the owner of TeleFutura and yesterday, December 3, it announced its intention to rebrand TeleFutura and change its name to UniMás on January 7, 2013. This is part of an enhanced commitment to more action, drama and sports for younger viewers, but will also link the network closer to its parent company. Broadcast design agency Troika developed the logo and brand identity for the rebranded network.

It has certainly been a year of rebrands for Spanish TV in the United States. Telemundo unveiled a new logo in May, and was followed by Univision in October, who also announced a new look for the largest Hispanic cable channel Galavisión in November. In addition to this, News Corp launched its new MundoFox network in August.

New logo: TVA

TVA is the most watched television network in Quebec, and by extension the most watched French language network in Canada. Last Thursday, November 29, it unveiled a completely new logo, reportedly developed with an agency called Sid Lee.

The previous logo was allegedly introduced 22 years ago and featured a triangle, a square and a circle, perhaps taking inspiration from its English counterpart CTV.

The new "dynamic" logo is said to reflect that dynamism of TVA and its brand, standing as "a symbol of a strong brand modernising itself, a brand synonymous with innovation, agility and creativity". On screen, the logo will be seen both in different colours as well as different 3D treatments that change depending on the programme.

New logo: Eurovision

Back in June, the European Broadcasting Union, a federation of broadcasting organisations in Europe and its surroundings, announced a new corporate identity. At the time, we only had a fairly nondescript logo and some applications. Since then it has been announced that the corporate identity was created by Studio Dumbar in the Netherlands and some new elements have been revealed, including a symbol and a new logo for EBU's television cooperation Eurovision, as well as its radio counterpart Euroradio.

Yesterday, November 29, Eurovision revealed the new intro that will precede broadcasts over the Eurovision network. It will first be seen on-air before the Junior Eurovision Song Contest tomorrow.

The new intro features pulsating circles that eventually form the symbol included in the Eurovision logo. According to a press release, the symbol "reflects Eurovision's modern outward look and its ability to unite audiences in a unique, international broadcast experience". The opening fanfare, taken from Marc-Antoine Charpentier's Te Deum, has been used since the 1950s and is still there.

New logo: ITV

First launched in London in 1955, and eventually expanding into a network covering the entire country, ITV is the oldest and most watched commercial TV channel in the United Kingdom. Through the years it has been the home of countless productions that we associate with the best of British television. It was originally made up of separate companies that were broadcasting under different names to different parts of the country, most of them have now merged into a single company covering all of England and Wales. Since 2002, the local names have been phased out and replaced by the ITV1 moniker.

After announcing that it would drop the numeral from the network's name to become simply ITV, a new brand identity was unveiled last week, on November 15. It was developed by an in-house team, headed by people poached from other broadcasters and agencies.

The new logo is flexible one, changing colour depending on its surroundings. The version seen above is how it will look when not accompanied with imagery.

The new look launches in January. ITV also has a string of spin-off channels, and the overhaul will be extended to them at the same time. Reportedly, ITV2, the entertainment channel, will be red, the drama channel ITV3 will be blue, while the male-skewing ITV4 with cult classics and sports becomes "slate grey".

New logo: Univision

Univision is by far the most-watched Hispanic television network in the United States. Having been known by its current name since the 80s, it has grown with the Hispanic community and is now well established as the fifth most watched network overall. Yesterday, October 17, it unveiled a new logo, intended to signify the transformation the network has gone through in its history. It was the result of a collaboration with Wolff Olins.

The stylised U used by Univision up until now has been reshaped slightly and turned into a three-dimensional object, and the four separate slices that made up the symbol have been joined. The stated intention is for the symbol to resemble a heart.

The out-going Univision logo was developed by Chermayeff & Geismar. It has been in use for about two decades (an official press release would have you believe that it was introduced in 1962, but that's nonsense). The new logo launches on January 1, 2013.
